Happy New Year to you all, we hope you are all fresh, revitalised and raring to go. This is the beginning of a new and exciting time for VWA as we launch into the year with our new dynamic branding. You may have already seen our new logo and look which we previewed late last year. Incorporating the red international V symbol into our logo helps strengthen connections with volunteering across the world. New CaLD Project for Volunteering WA
Volunteering WA has recently commenced an exciting new project aimed at enhancing access to formal volunteering for Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse (CaLD) communities. The project, funded through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s Living in Harmony Programme, will assist
people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) communities to learn more about the diversity of ways people volunteer in the community.
The project will include:
- ½ day free Cultural Awareness training for VWA member organisations. This three hour training session will be held in the
conference room at City West Lotteries House in West Perth. We have two dates to choose from; Tuesday 19 Feb or 4 March. Session times
are 9.30am to 12.30pm.
- A series of day bus trips taking small groups of CaLD community members to a variety of places to see volunteers in action.
Participating CaLD Community members will witness a diverse range of volunteer activities being undertaken in the community. Each stop on
the tour will last 20-30 minutes.
- A Harmony Day market day event which brings together participating organisations and CaLD Community members.
If your organisation is based in Perth and would like to participate in any or all of the above activities please contact Fran Robinson
our project coordinator for more information. Fran can be contacted by email on zfranrobinson@iinet.net.au
*There are still places available for the free training on Tuesday 19 February so if you are interested in coming along please
let Fran know.

Lotterywest Grants to extend the capacity of not-for-profit organisations
In October 2007 Lotterywest undertook a review of its grants approach to supporting the organisational development of the not-for-profit
sector. These grants have been developed to assist in extending the capacity of organisations through grants for Organisational
Development, Conferences and Professional Development. Key improvements to this grant area include:
- Removal of the limits for Organisational Development activities (previously $10000 for an individual organisation and $20000 for
collaborative or sector-wide proposals); and
- Removal of the $15000 limit for Conferences.
The Extending the Capacity of Not-For-Profit Organisations Information Package can be accessed from the Lotterywest website at www.lotterywest.wa.gov.au/grants
In 2008 Lotterywest celebrates the 75th anniversary of the very first lottery draw and the very first grants to charitable and
community groups.

Give20 (Community Service Program) Update
The new give20 web site is being tested by a number of schools in the next few weeks. We just wanted to say a big thank you for all the
thought and effort you put into giving us suitable positions to use. A large number of our member organisations took the chance to
contribute to this database. We just want to let you know you may now start to receive inquiries about these community service program
positions you sent through to us. We will advise you as soon as give20 goes live on the Internet.
The site will be continuously updated, so please feel free to email Traci Gamblin (tkgamblin@hotmail.com)
with additional positions suitable for high school students completing their
20-hour community service requirement. If you haven’t submitted any positions yet then there is still time to jump on board before
the website is launched, let Traci know.

Visiting Volunteers Program
Following the recent retirement of Noreen Townsend, Margaret Andrews joined Volunteering WA in December 2007 to manage this program.
Other team members Ivan Lundberg and Jim Kelly continue to volunteer their invaluable time and expertise to the program, albeit Jim in a
more limited capacity.
This year’s major focus for the Visiting Volunteers Program is on consolidation and expansion. Building sustainable partnerships to
achieve positive outcomes for WA’s regional communities is seen to be a vital component for the future development of the program.
More regular and timely communications have been highlighted as an important element in providing an improved service to our members,
partner organisations and volunteers.
VWA and Visiting Volunteers Program will have a stand at the 2008 Perth Caravan and Camping Show 13-17 March and we look forward to
meeting existing and potential members and volunteers and answering any queries. The Visiting Volunteers team would be pleased to hear
from you at any time, or meet with you, and may be contacted on 9482 4333.

Enhancing Access team hit the road
After a relaxing break over the holidays, the Enhancing Access team is back at it. There are a number of Disability Awareness Training sessions
taking place in regional areas this month. Beck and Martha will be travelling to Albany, Geraldton, Yanchep and Kalgoorlie to deliver training to
support Volunteer Resource Centres (VRC’s) in these areas to engage more people with disabilities in volunteer positions. If you are interested in
Disability Awareness Training, please contact Martha on 9483 4333.
In other EA news, Beck has been working on a program to offer small grants to VRC’s to assist in providing volunteering opportunities to people
with disabilities. Grants have been given to various VRC’s in Perth and regional areas, and will be used to facilitate projects that support
inclusion within the disability sector.

Survey – got some time to spare to contribute to your profession?
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Nto5qBdHKg7IbDFKX0ZfPA_3d_3d
The Global Volunteer Management Survey is being undertaken to research the state of volunteer management globally. The results will be
used to:
- identify trends and issues globally
- develop appropriate training resources
- provide data for articles for publication
- assist Volunteer Centres, volunteer involving organisations and professional associations to see what volunteer managers/coordinators
are saying and feeling
- raise the profile of managers/coordinators of volunteers
The survey average time seems to be 17 minutes with people taking between ten minutes (the shortest) and forty six minutes (the longest).
Your help is invaluable, thank you. – Martin Cowling, CEO, People First Total Solutions.

New internet resource to strengthen not-for-profit sector
A PhilanthropyWiki has recently been launched to build a greater understanding of the not-for-profit sector and help community
organisations operate more effectively. Established by Philanthropy Australia, with funding from the Macquarie Group Foundation, the
PhilanthropyWiki is an online encyclopaedia on philanthropy in Australia. It provides a first port of call for not-for-profit
organisations, foundations and others involved in the sector to source information on philanthropy, donors and grantmaking.
The PhilanthropyWiki is publicly available at www.philanthropywiki.org.au

Everyone knows someone who's a volunteer and we're often inspired by the great work of volunteer-involving projects and organisations.
The Inspiration Zone on the Volunteering Australia website is your place to share your own stories and read about other people's
experiences in the not-for-profit sector. Stories that appear in the Inspiration Zone may also appear as profiles in involve, VA’s

Dyer, Andy Fryar and Rob Jackson have now released an updated version. The new edition contains 50 chapters from 40 authors across the

Corporate volunteering
Projects NEEDED to fulfil the demand received from corporations
Our Corporate Volunteering program is very active and I am currently working with a number of large corporate organisations seeking volunteering positions.
It has been interesting to find out that many employees are driving the interest within their organisation and this is generating the need to provide a variety of short term volunteer opportunities for individuals and small groups.
Do you have projects to accommodate?
- Three groups of 15-20 looking for outdoor projects before the end of April (one day tasks)? Some of these groups are quite able to manage small renovations, re-painting, gardening, general building maintenance
- Groups of 5-10 looking for a project for 0.5-1 day; possibly every 3 months
- Other short term activities available outside normal working hours
If you would like to partner with one of these enthusiastic organisations, please contact me as soon as possible.
Anne Preston
Volunteer Services Manager
